Modern Dance Theory for Burlesque Performers

  • Newport Theater 956 West Newport Avenue Chicago, IL, 60657 United States (map)

Experienced choreographer and burlesque performer Pixy Belmont will lead you through a series of fun, easy movement activities intended to refresh your choreography and give you the tools to get out of a "movement rut," at any time.

We'll experiment with the Modern Dance elements of level, pathway, energy, location, relationship, force, and transition in a mix of free exploration and goal-focused tasks. Performers may focus their choreographic work on an existing act, develop a new act, and/or work on pieces from different routines throughout the workshop. No choreography will be given, only tools and direction.

Attire is movement/workout clothing, but participants are encouraged to bring a single prop or costume piece from an act to work with. However, the lesson plan does not include any "dressing time," so please do not bring anything complex to re-set/put back on. Participants may work in any footwear they choose, including heels, dance shoes, and street shoes, as long as they fasten firmly to the foot.

Some prior burleque experience is required to participate in this workshop. The workshop is open to movers of all levels, genders, body types, and abilities.

Instructor Qualifications: After graduating with a minor in Modern Dance from Ohio University, Pixy immediately began teaching modern dance theory to students of all ages. Because she began dancing at a late age (relative to her peers), she witnessed first-hand the way exploring movement theory supports problem-solving and brain development. In addition to teaching regular dance classes, MsPixy has also choreographed over 50 full-length musicals, 4 long-running and critically acclaimed burlesque parody shows, as well as endless routines for herself, her troupe, and others.
